Master of specialisation in Social Economy


An inter-university programme (UCLouvain-ULiège) to specialise in the social economy and find out about enterprises working for social and ecological transition

By drawing on innovative socio-economic models, the social economy is rethinking the enteprise to meet the challenges of transition and societal challenges.

This master's degree from UCLouvain and ULiège is organised by an internationally recognised teaching team involved in the social enterprise ecosystem.

This program will provide you with multidisciplinary analytical grids and management tools to develop your projects towards a more sustainable economy.

It also offers the opportunities for internships in Belgium and abroad, as well as study periods (Erasmus) at the University of Roskilde in Denmark and the University of Aix-Marseille in France.

Who is this program for?

The program is aimed at 2nd cycle graduates who wish to complement their initial university training with a specialisation in the field of social economics.

It is open to adults with at least 5 years' professional experience who wish to perfect their practical and theoretical training in the social economy field, or broaden or reorient their professional career towards this field.

Skills and qualifications on completion of the Master's program

With this program you will be able to:

  • Develop analytical and management skills: know how to manage the major functions of a company, understand the various forms of economic organisation, their roles and specific features, analyse and anticipate societal issues.
  • Identify the issues underlying the social economy at the level of players, organisations and institutions, and decrypt how it can contribute to building the social and ecological transition
  • Develop proposals for action to support the social economy and its ecosystem, using analytical frameworks and tools consistent with the values and aims of the social economy, with a view to practicing ethics
  • Know and understand the ecosystem and environment (economic, political, legal) in which social enterprises and economic projects with added social, environmental and ethical value develop.
  • Articulate scientific disciplinary knowledge and the knowledge of the players involved.

Practicalities

  • A 1-year program, which can be spread over 2 years
  • Classes in Louvain-la-Neuve on Tuesdays, and in Liège on Thursdays
  • 60 credits in total, including
  • 25 credits of common courses in Q1, and a choice of two options in Q2 (for 20 credits):

either "Social Economy, Enterprise and Transition" (courses in Liège and Louvain-la-Neuve)

or "International approach to the social economy" (course to be taken at the University of Roskilde in Denmark, or at the University of Aix-Marseille in France)

  • A research dissertation, internship or project dissertation involving an assignment in a company (15 credits)

Admission requirements

By application if you have a Master's degree.

If you have 5 years' professional experience in the social economy sector, you can apply to have your experience recognised. This experience is assessed on the basis of a portfolio and an examination.
